Introduction
Our research is focused on the development of new antiviral molecules i.e. acyclic nucleoside phosphonate (ANP) analogues active against DNA-viruses: herpesviruses (CMV, VZV and HSV), poxviruses (vaccinia, cowpox, camelpox and orf), murine- and human polyomaviruses and human papillomaviruses.
The study of the molecular mechanisms leading to resistance development for the different viruses has been widely investigated. We also developed a three dimensional (3D) culture system of epithelial cells (raft culture) in order to study those viruses with epithelial tropism; i.e. α-herpesviruses, pox and papillomaviruses. This system is more representative of the in vivo situation and allows the study of viral pathogenesis.
Recently in January 2009 a reference and Service center was created by the funding receiving from the Belgian National Cancer Plan.
